All the interesting places and most popular attractions to see in Sofia are situated in the city center.

Churches & Cathedrals

Aleksander Nevski Cathedral

One of the symbols not just of Sofia but of Bulgaria itself, this massive, awe-inspiring church was built between 1882 and 1912 in memory of the 200,000 Russian soldiers who died fighting for Bulgaria’s independence during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78). It is named in honor of a 13th-century Russian warrior-prince. Designed by Russian architect Alexander Pomerantsev, the church was built in the neo-Byzantine style favored in Russia at the time and is adorned with mosaics and gold-laden domes. The cavernous, incense-scented interior is decorated with naturalistic (though now rather faded) murals, pendulous chandeliers and elaborate onyx and alabaster thrones. Visitors are welcome and there are daily services where you can hear evocative Orthodox chants and prayers.

Sveta Sofia Church

Sveta Sofia is one of the capital's oldest churches and gave the city its name. A subterranean museum houses an ancient necropolis, with 56 tombs and the remains of four other churches. Outside are the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and an eternal flame, and the grave of Ivan Vazov, Bulgaria's most revered writer.

Sveta Nedelya Cathedral

Completed in 1863, this magnificent domed church is one of the city’s major landmarks, and is noted for its rich, Byzantine-style murals.

Museums & Galleries

Archaeological Museum

Housed in a former mosque built in 1496, this museum displays a wealth of Thracian, Roman and medieval artefacts. Highlights include a mosaic floor from the Church of Sveta Sofia, a 4th-century BC Thracian gold burial mask, and a magnificent bronze head, thought to represent a Thracian king.

Sofia History Museum

The history of Sofia is presented on two floors of the magnificent former Turkish Mineral Baths, just behind the mosque. Exhibitions are divided thematically over eight chambers, with the most interesting rooms dedicated to the Bulgarian royal families of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the findings of recent archeological digs around town. There are plenty of signs in English.
The Mineral Baths – also known as the Turkish Baths – was completed in 1913. Its elegant striped facade and ceramic decorations recall the designs of the medieval churches in Nessebar on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast.

Sofia City Art Gallery

The chunky building at the southern end of the City Garden park is an art gallery staging rotating exhibitions of mostly contemporary Bulgarian and international art over two floors. Enter from Knyaz Al. Battenberg str.

National Gallery Quadrat 500

This massive visual-arts gallery combines the holdings of the National Gallery and the former Museum of Foreign Art. The result is several hundred paintings spread out over 28 rooms. Works range from African tribal masks to countless 19th- and 20th-century paintings, mostly by lesser-known artists. Minor sketches by Renoir and Matisse and works by Gustave Courbet are on display.

Landmarks & important sites

Ancient Serdica Complex

This remarkable, partly covered excavation site, situated just above the Serdika metro station, displays the remains of the Roman city, Serdica, that once occupied this area. The remains were unearthed from 2010 to 2012 during construction of the metro. There are fragments of eight streets, an early Christian basilica, baths and houses dating from the 4th to 6th centuries. Plenty of signage in English.

Statue of Sveta Sofia

Sveta Sofia stands tall, arms outstretched, golden-skinned and black-eyed, over Bulgaria’s representative center. Though it bears the name Sveta Sofia, the statue does not depict one individual, per se. Rather, she is a combination of figures. The two most commonly attributed are Sofia and Athena, both of Hellenistic origins. Both symbolize "Holy Wisdom" (or "Hagia Sofia", the expression for which the city and its founding church were named), and the statue contains ancient vestiges of that concept: the crown, the laurel wreath, and the owl.

Ivan Vazov National Theatre

The Ivan Vazov National Theatre is Bulgaria's national theatre, as well as the oldest and most authoritative theatre in the country and one of the important landmarks of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

President's Building

The Bulgarian president’s office isn't open to the public, but the changing of the guard ceremony (on the hour) is a spectacle not to be missed, for the full ceremony, replete with music, weapons and all manner of pomp.

Sofia University

The St. Clement of Ohrid University of Sofia or Sofia University is the oldest higher education institution in Bulgaria, founded on 1 October 1888. The university's edifice was constructed between 1924 and 1934 with the financial support of the brothers Evlogi Georgiev and Hristo Georgiev, whose sculptures are now featured on its facade, and has an area of 18,624m2 and a total of 324 premises.

Walk down the main pedestrian street, Vitosha Boulevard

There are so many shops and places to eat on Vitosha Boulevard, the main pedestrian street in Sofia. You can see Vitosha Mountain, the biggest mountain that overlooks Sofia. Come here to walk up and down on the street, go window shopping, stop for a coffee or taste different food in restaurants and bars.

Yuzhen Park (South Park)

South of the city centre, Yuzhen Park is a vast, wild green sprawl, filled with trees and shady pathways. A sparkling stream bubbles through it, discreet bars and cafes.

Park Center Sofia Mall

It is the nearest mall to the venue of the event – National Palace of Culture. There is a store for everyone: a cozy cafeteria, a chic bar, fashion shops, a children’s center, cinema, luxury jewelry, nice shoes, quality cosmetics and beauty stores, a fitness center and all sorts of goods.
